In a recent Facebook post, Malinga reflected on Sri Lanka’s journey since their maiden World Cup triumph in 1996. He acknowledged the disappointments the team faced, including first-round exits and defeats in four World Cup finals, which led some supporters to drift away from the game.
However, he emphasized that loyal fans who endured 18 years of hardship, criticism, and setbacks were ultimately rewarded with the 2014 World Cup victory. According to Malinga, that success was the result of unwavering belief and long-term commitment to the team.
Stressing that “giving up is not the solution to the game,” Malinga said that although 12 years have passed since the last World Cup win, there remains a strong base of knowledgeable and passionate supporters who will continue to stand by the team until it lifts the trophy again.
