A government programme aimed at granting legal land ownership to long-term residents was held yesterday (24) at the Anamaduwa Divisional Secretariat, with Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Prof. Chandana Abayarathna, presiding over the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister said the initiative goes beyond issuing land deeds and is part of a broader plan to improve living conditions in rural areas. He noted that residents in Anamaduwa, Nawagattegama, Karuwalagaswewa, Mahakumbukkadawala and Wanathavilluwa have lived for years without legal ownership, causing uncertainty and hardship.

He stressed that the programme is being implemented transparently and without political influence, ensuring land is allocated based solely on eligibility. The Minister said the objective is to address a basic need of the people and provide long-term security to families.

Under the “Rich Country, A Beautiful Life” policy of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the government aims to guarantee both land ownership and improved housing for citizens. The Minister pointed out that the housing assistance programme, “Your Own Place, A Beautiful Life,” is already underway to support landless families.

He also assured that infrastructure development will accompany the land ownership drive. Authorities will take steps to resolve issues related to water, electricity and road access in the newly regularised areas.

The Minister urged beneficiaries to retain and develop their lands productively rather than selling them.

The event was attended by local representatives, the Anamaduwa Divisional Secretary, government officials and a large gathering of residents.
