Sri Lanka and South Korea have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and prepare for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year, following high-level talks held in Seoul today (February 25).

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Employment Arun Hemachandra, who is on an official visit to South Korea, met with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Eui-Hae Cecilia Chung at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul.

With the two countries set to celebrate five decades of diplomatic relations next year, both sides agreed to mark the milestone in a meaningful manner through high-level visits and enhanced institutional engagement. The discussions reaffirmed their shared commitment to elevating the Sri Lanka–Republic of Korea partnership in the years ahead.

During the talks, attention was also given to expanding economic cooperation, overseas employment opportunities and development collaboration, particularly in the context of Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery and progress in debt restructuring.

The Deputy Minister expressed appreciation for the timely assistance extended by South Korea following Cyclone Ditva and sought continued support for Sri Lanka’s national reconstruction initiatives.

He further noted that growing cultural exchanges — especially the increasing interest among Sri Lankan youth in Korean culture — have significantly strengthened people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and South Korea.

The meeting underscored the longstanding friendship between the two nations and their intention to broaden cooperation across multiple sectors in the lead-up to the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations.
