In a landmark step toward national digital transformation, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, announced today (25) that all necessary arrangements are in place to issue a high-accuracy Digital Identity Card to the public by the end of 2026.

Speaking at a media briefing on the country’s digital transformation agenda, the Deputy Minister stated that efforts to digitize the national identity system have been ongoing since 2012. However, recent administrative progress has accelerated the initiative, bringing it to its final implementation phase.

He further noted that the procurement process is expected to be completed by April 2026. The first batch of digital identity cards is scheduled to be distributed during the third or fourth quarter of 2026, marking a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital evolution.
