Former Minister Ali Sabry has expressed concern over the arrest of former State Intelligence Chief Suresh Sallay, describing it as a troubling development for the Sri Lanka Army and its Intelligence Corps.

In a statement posted on social media, Sabry said the arrest of Major General Sallay—an officer he noted was associated with operations that dismantled the LTTE’s intelligence network and targeted senior leadership figures including Tamilchelvan, as well as efforts linked to the apprehension of Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP)—raises serious concerns about the direction of the national discourse.

Sabry stated that many of the officers who once risked their lives during the country’s most dangerous years now appear to be drawn into what he described as a political battlefield shaped by competing narratives rather than evidence. While acknowledging that accountability under the law is essential in a democracy, he emphasized that it must be pursued with fairness, restraint, and respect for institutional integrity.

Referring to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, Sabry said the tragedy warranted a professional, evidence-based inquiry focused on justice for victims and national security. He noted that international cooperation, including the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and U.S. authorities, had already taken place through investigations and prosecutions.

He cautioned that continuing to politicize the issue for partisan purposes risks damaging Sri Lanka’s credibility and long-term security interests. Sabry further warned that undermining national security institutions for short-term political gain could weaken morale within the armed forces and send a negative signal to those tasked with protecting the country.
