The move comes after the Railway Department’s General Manager reportedly limited the disaster loan amount to Rs. 275,000, despite the government’s recent budget proposal to increase the facility for public sector employees from Rs. 250,000 to Rs. 400,000.
Union representatives argue that the revised amount falls short of what was approved in Parliament and deprives railway employees of the relief intended under the latest budget measures. They stress that many railway workers depend on the disaster loan scheme during times of emergency and natural calamities.
In their letter to the President, the unions have sought immediate intervention to ensure that railway employees receive the full Rs. 400,000 loan facility as proposed by the government.
Meanwhile, discussions are underway among several railway trade unions regarding possible collective action if the matter is not addressed promptly. Union leaders have indicated that stronger measures could be taken in the coming weeks if a satisfactory solution is not reached.
Copies of the correspondence sent to the President, along with documents relating to the revised loan amount, have also been made public.
