The National Operation Committee of the “Rata Ekata Jathika Meheyuma” (One Country, One National Operation) program has announced that the week beginning March 01 will be officially observed as “Drug Prevention Week” across the country.

This decision has been taken in view of the severe and destructive impact that drug abuse has had on Sri Lankan society. Authorities emphasized that the increasing use of illicit drugs has led to serious social, economic, and health consequences, affecting families, communities, and the nation as a whole.

The Drug Prevention Week will be implemented in line with the ongoing national program “Rata Ekata Jathika Meheyuma,” which aims to unite the country in addressing key social challenges. As part of the initiative, a series of awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, educational activities, and enforcement measures are expected to be carried out islandwide.

Officials stated that the primary objective of the program is to educate the public—especially youth about the dangers of drug use, strengthen prevention efforts, and promote a drug-free society. The initiative also seeks to encourage the active participation of government institutions, schools, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and the general public.

Authorities have called on all citizens to extend their fullest cooperation to ensure the success of Drug Prevention Week and to collectively work towards safeguarding the future of the nation.
