Police said the Russian tourist had installed a hidden CCTV camera in his room without informing the resort owners. On Sunday (22 February), he left the room and, upon returning, discovered that more than Rs. 620,000 had been stolen.
Footage from the secret camera reportedly showed the daughter of the resort owner entering the room and taking the money. Acting on this evidence, the tourist lodged a complaint with the Unawatuna Tourist Police.
Police arrested the suspect and was handed over to the Habaraduwa Police for further investigations.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced in court today (24 February).
