The National Dengue Control Unit of the Ministry of Health has launched a special three-day dengue suppression programme starting today in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) areas.

Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, stated that the initiative will focus on high-risk localities reporting increased numbers of dengue cases. Targeted vector control measures, inspections, and community awareness activities will be carried out as part of the intensified campaign.

Teams comprising Public Health Inspectors, community police units, and other support groups have been mobilized to assist with the operation. Authorities aim to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites while encouraging residents to maintain clean surroundings to prevent further spread of the disease.

Currently, the highest number of dengue cases in the country has been reported from the Colombo District in the Western Province. Within the Colombo Municipal Council area alone, 889 dengue cases have been recorded so far this year.

Islandwide, a total of 12,165 dengue cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, prompting health officials to strengthen control and prevention measures in vulnerable areas.

Health authorities urge the public to cooperate with inspection teams and take proactive steps to eliminate stagnant water and other potential mosquito breeding grounds to support the success of the programme.
