The honour was bestowed in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Buddhist scholastic studies, spiritual leadership, and his dedicated efforts in strengthening cultural ties between Sri Lanka and India. This marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time a Sri Lankan has received this distinguished accolade.
The Lifetime Achievement Award has previously been presented to globally renowned and respected personalities, including former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, in appreciation of their exceptional international service and leadership.
Commenting on the recognition, Ven. Assaji Nayaka Thero stated that the honour bestowed upon him should be regarded as a tribute to the entire Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and India. He emphasized that the award reflects the shared spiritual and cultural heritage of the two nations.
The Thero further affirmed his continued commitment to fostering the longstanding historical ties between Sri Lanka and India, and to further strengthening bilateral relations through religious, cultural, and educational cooperation.
