Police said officers carried out a raid in the Kudalunuka area following a tip-off. Upon arrival, they found that the suspects were in the process of killing and burning the protected reptile in the field.
However, the four individuals fled the scene after noticing the police presence, leaving behind the burning carcass.
The suspects have been identified, and investigations are underway to arrest them, police said.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Rideemaliyadda Police.
