It was reported that the Ministry has called for threat assessment reports from the State Intelligence Service concerning individuals considered to be at risk.
The move follows the recent shooting in Akuregoda, Battaramulla, where alleged underworld gunmen killed a lawyer and his wife. The incident prompted an extensive discussion among members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka at a meeting held in Colombo.
It was reported that several lawyers handling cases involving underworld figures have received death threats from rival gangs. Prison officers are also said to be among the most vulnerable, with some reportedly seeking transfers due to security concerns.
Many prison officials have allegedly been threatened for preventing underworld inmates from using mobile phones and engaging in other illicit activities inside prisons.
According to sources, security assessments are already being conducted for individuals who have lodged complaints with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over threats to their lives. Several prominent Buddhist monks have also requested security under the same procedure.
Officials stated that security will be provided based on formal threat evaluations confirming the existence of a genuine risk.
Responding to media queries, Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said that security assessments are carried out for anyone who informs the IGP of threats to their safety.
He added that the assessment reports are submitted to a committee, and appropriate security measures are granted if a credible threat is identified.
