CR & FC edged out defending champions Kandy Sports Club 23-21 in a thrilling Cup final at Longdon Place on Saturday (21) to be crowned 2025/26 Inter-Club Rugby League Champions.

The title was decided in the final minute of the season when Murshid Dooray calmly slotted over a decisive penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters. The late kick came after CR were awarded a penalty for a high tackle, snatching victory from Kandy who had briefly taken the lead moments earlier.

Despite being reduced to 14 men following a red card to Dinal Ekanayake in the 13th minute, Kandy showed remarkable resilience and led 14-7 at halftime. A dramatic late try by Diluksha Dange appeared to have sealed the championship for the visitors as they moved 21-20 ahead.

However, CR had the final say. The home side finished with one converted try, two unconverted tries and two penalties, while Kandy crossed for three converted tries.

Having beaten Kandy the previous week at the same venue, CR entered the contest as favourites and delivered under pressure, denying the defending champions a successful title defence in a pulsating end to the league season.
