The Irrigation Department has issued a potential minor flood warning valid for the next 24 hours for several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River Basin following heavy rainfall received since last night (21) in upstream catchment areas.

Residents in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala have been warned of possible flooding.

The department also cautioned that the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road in the Gallella area and the access road to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara, including its surrounding areas, may be inundated.

Devotees planning to visit the temple are advised to avoid travelling to the area over the next few days until further notice.
