Nearly 9,000 drivers and passengers have been fined for failing to comply with mandatory seatbelt regulations on Sri Lanka’s expressways, police said.

Law enforcement authorities stated that inspections are being conducted at all entry and exit points of expressways to strictly enforce the rule. Those found travelling without wearing seatbelts have been penalised.

Police noted that wearing seatbelts became compulsory for both drivers and passengers on expressways from September 1 last year.
