A new digital platform titled “Maize Stock” was officially launched yesterday (20) at the Ministry of Agriculture under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne.

The online information system and web application have been introduced to accurately manage Sri Lanka’s maize supply and demand. The primary objective of the platform is to maintain reliable data on existing maize stocks across the country and to facilitate scientific decision-making regarding imports.

Through the implementation of this digital system, all stakeholders in the maize sector are expected to benefit significantly.

Farmers will be able to identify market demand for their harvests in advance and secure fair prices without undue influence from intermediaries. At the same time, stock collectors will gain a clearer understanding of the total maize availability and shortages within the country, enabling them to plan procurement and distribution activities with reduced risk.

Animal feed manufacturers and other industry stakeholders will also be able to easily identify the locations and quantities of available raw materials, ensuring uninterrupted production processes.

Importantly, the availability of accurate data on domestic production will help prevent unnecessary maize imports, conserve foreign exchange, and support policy decisions that safeguard local farmers.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister Karunaratne stated that the system would enhance transparency in the maize sector and promote data-driven decision-making, creating an environment that protects both farmers and consumers alike.

He further emphasized the importance of registering on the platform, urging maize farmers, rural collectors, animal feed producers, and other industry participants to input accurate data into the system to ensure its effectiveness.
