The Kandalama Reservoir has once again begun spilling due to heavy rainfall in the area, according to the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

Spill operations commenced today (20), leading to significant disruptions along the Dambulla–Wewalwewa main road, which has been submerged by overflowing water. Authorities report that traffic movement has been severely affected as a result.

Currently, approximately 780 cubic feet of water per second is being released through the Kuda Thamman Ela into the Mirisgoniya Oya, flowing onward toward Kala Wewa.

The overflow from the reservoir continues to pass over the Dambulla–Wewalwewa roadway, further hampering vehicular movement. The area is known for its concentration of tourist hotels, and several buses carrying foreign tourists have reportedly been seen crossing the flooded road despite the risks.

Authorities have urged motorists using this route to exercise extreme caution as spill water continues to flow across the roadway.
