The initiative, developed by the Police Research and Development Division, enables road accident data from all police jurisdictions island-wide to be systematically transmitted to the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division for comprehensive analysis. By studying accident trends and statistical patterns within specific regions, authorities will be better equipped to implement targeted strategies to minimize traffic-related incidents.
The system was ceremonially introduced as a pilot project to all police stations in the Western Province at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Inspector General’s Office in Colombo. The event was held under the patronage of Inspector General of Police, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya.
Following a detailed evaluation of the system’s accuracy and operational efficiency, plans are in place to expand its implementation to police stations across the island.
To facilitate the smooth operation of the new system, 142 tablet devices along with SIM cards were distributed among police stations.
The launch event was attended by Senior Deputy Inspector General Sajeewa Medawatte (Western Province), Senior Deputy Inspector General Ranmal Kodituwakku (Crime and Traffic), Deputy Inspector General Nishantha de Silva (Colombo District), Deputy Inspector General W.P.J. Senadheera (Traffic Control and Road Safety Division), along with senior officers and Officers-in-Charge of Traffic Divisions from all police stations in the Western Province.
Authorities believe the new data-driven approach will significantly enhance evidence-based decision-making in traffic management and road safety, ultimately contributing to the reduction of road accidents and the protection of public lives.
