Admiral Steve Koehler, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, met with Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha, Secretary of Defence of Sri Lanka, to reaffirm a transparent partnership aimed at protecting sovereignty and strengthening regional security.

The discussions underscored the growing importance of collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly amid evolving transnational threats and increasing strategic competition across vital sea lanes.
Strengthening Professionalism and Capability
Both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing professionalism and operational capability between their respective armed forces. They highlighted the value of continued engagement, joint training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives designed to strengthen institutional bonds and build long-term trust.

Advancing Shared Security
A key priority of the meeting was improving interoperability to effectively address shared security challenges, including maritime crime, illegal fishing, trafficking, and other transnational threats. The leaders stressed that closer coordination between the two nations’ defence establishments would contribute to a safer and more secure regional environment.
Enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness
Given Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean, maritime domain awareness featured prominently in the talks. Both sides discussed advancing collaboration to improve monitoring capabilities, information-sharing, and coordinated responses to maritime incidents. These efforts aim to support stability across the broader Indo-Pacific and ensure secure sea lines of communication.
The meeting reflects the continued commitment of the United States and Sri Lanka to maintain open dialogue and practical cooperation, reinforcing a partnership built on transparency, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a secure and stable Indian Ocean region.
