The ceremony is being organised under the guidance of the Most Venerable Karagoda Uyangoda Maithrimoorthy Maha Nayaka Thera and with the leadership of Most Venerable Balapitiyage Sirisewali Thera, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya.
The Upasampada Vinaya Karma ceremony, which is ordinarily conducted once every three years, will take place from 10 to 25 July 2026 at the Udakukkhepa Seema Malaka near the historic Kalutara Bodhiya, with the participation of over 400 novice monks.
The State Upasampada Vinaya Karma ceremony is scheduled for 9 July 2026 at 3.00 p.m. within the Kalutara Bodhi premises under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Plans to conduct the ceremony with State patronage were finalised following a request made by the Supreme Mahanayaka of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya when the President called on him on 1 January to receive New Year blessings.
Extensive discussions on organisational arrangements were held under the coordination of the President’s Office, with support from State institutions, the Tri-Forces, the Police and several private sector organisations.
A preliminary discussion regarding the State Upasampada Vinaya Karma Ceremony was held this morning (19) at the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka under the supervision of senior members of the Maha Sangha and the leadership of Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
Secretary General Most Venerable Balapitiyage Sirisewali Thera commended the Government for extending State patronage, stating that recognising the essential role of fully ordained Bhikkhus in ensuring the long-term continuity of the Gautama Buddha Sasana is truly commendable.
Several senior members of the Maha Sangha, government officials, senior officers of the Tri-Forces and Police, and representatives of private institutions were present at the discussion.
The event is regarded as a significant religious milestone, reflecting renewed State support for the preservation and continuity of the Buddha Sasana in Sri Lanka.
