The announcement was made last evening (18) by the Colombo Grand Mosque following reports from Hilal sub-committees appointed islandwide. According to these reports, the new crescent moon was sighted yesterday evening, paving the way for the official declaration of the start of Ramadan.

Based on the confirmed moon sighting, the Hilal Division of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), together with the Colombo Grand Mosque and the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, unanimously decided that the first day of Ramadan falls today (19).

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is observed as a sacred month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal by Muslims worldwide. During this month, devotees fast from dawn to sunset, engaging in increased acts of worship and charity.

The beginning of Ramadan marks a significant spiritual period for Sri Lanka’s Muslim community, who observe the month with devotion and unity.
