Sri Lankan Batik Artisan wins best foreign award at International Crafts Fair in India

Renowned batik artisan Iresha Chinthani de Silva has brought pride to Sri Lanka by winning the “Best Foreign Award” at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Fair held in Haryana, India.

The prestigious international exhibition, held from January 31 to February 15, featured talented artisans from 53 countries, showcasing a wide array of traditional crafts and cultural creations. 

Representing Sri Lanka, Iresha Chinthani captivated visitors and judges alike with her intricate batik designs, which highlighted the richness, creativity, and technical excellence of Sri Lankan batik art.

Her collection, inspired by local heritage and contemporary aesthetics, received widespread international acclaim throughout the fair. In recognition of her outstanding craftsmanship and artistic presentation, she was honored with the “Best Foreign Award,” a significant achievement among strong global competition.

Following her success, Iresha Chinthani de Silva and her team returned to Sri Lanka on February 16. Upon their arrival, they were warmly welcomed by officials representing the National Crafts Council and the Ministry of Industries, who commended her for elevating the country’s traditional arts on an international stage.

Her achievement marks a proud moment for Sri Lanka’s craft sector and underscores the global appeal of the nation’s batik industry. Officials noted that such international recognition not only celebrates individual talent but also strengthens the country’s cultural presence worldwide.
