Operated under the Department of National Zoological Gardens, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage celebrated over five decades of service in elephant conservation and welfare. To commemorate the milestone, the newly constructed complex was officially declared open by the Minister in charge.
The “Nidahas Ali Arana” facility has been built in line with modern animal welfare concepts and is specifically designed to accommodate mature male Asian elephants. Special attention has been given to managing elephants during the “musth” period — a natural phase of heightened sexual and aggressive behavior experienced by adult bulls.
The new enclosure aims to ensure the safety of both elephants and caretakers while promoting improved welfare standards. Officials noted that the initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to enhancing conservation efforts and maintaining international standards in wildlife management.
