Addressing a press conference held at the Department of Government Information today, PMB Chairman A.M.U. Pinnalanda stated that the government has allocated Rs. 10 billion for the purchase of paddy during the Maha cultivation season.
Under the newly introduced pricing structure, the PMB will procure paddy at the following guaranteed rates:
Keeri Samba: Rs. 140 per kilogram
Samba: Rs. 130 per kilogram
Nadu: Rs. 120 per kilogram
Chairman Pinnalanda emphasized that the guaranteed prices are aimed at ensuring a fair and stable income for farmers while strengthening the country’s food security programme.
The procurement initiative is expected to support thousands of paddy farmers across the island during the Maha season, while helping to stabilize market prices and maintain adequate rice stocks for domestic consumption.
The PMB further assured that necessary storage and logistical arrangements have been put in place to facilitate a smooth purchasing process throughout the season.
