All spill gates of the Ulhitiya Rathkinda Mahveli Reservoir were opened today (14) due to a rapid rise in water levels בעקבות the prevailing heavy rains, according to Resident Technical Officer Deeptha Chandana Jayasekara.

Located in Girandurukotte in the Badulla District, the Ulhitiya Rathkinda Mahaweli Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the Mahaweli ‘C’ Zone and is one of the twin reservoirs in Sri Lanka.

Officials stated that water is being released at a rate of one foot per gate, with a discharge capacity of 77 cubic meters per second.

As a result of the water being released into the Ulhitiya Oya, the bridge across the stream has been submerged, disrupting traffic along the Rathkinda–Hobariyawa main road.

Authorities have urged residents living along both banks of the Ulhitiya Oya to remain vigilant. Motorists using the Rathkinda–Hobariyawa road are advised to use alternative routes until further notice, the Resident Technical Officer added.
