The renovation is being carried out under the Government’s ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme at an estimated cost of Rs. 450 million. A key feature of the project is the direct labour contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force, which is spearheading much of the development work.
A special progress review meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat to assess the current status of construction and address potential challenges in opening the facility to the public as scheduled. The discussion focused on ensuring timely completion and resolving operational or logistical obstacles.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from several key ministries and institutions. Among them were the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Force Commander Air Marshal V. B. Edirisinghe, and senior officers of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the Special Task Force. Representatives from the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), the Sri Lanka Railways Department, and the Road Development Authority were also present.
Officials from the Colombo Municipal Council and the Urban Development Authority joined the discussion to coordinate city planning and infrastructure improvements. In addition, representatives from the Ceylon Electricity Board, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Sri Lanka Telecom, the Ministry of Digital Economy, and NIO Engineering participated to ensure smooth service delivery and consultancy support.
The Government’s primary objective is to transform the Colombo Central Bus Stand into a modern transport hub with upgraded amenities, improved passenger flow, and enhanced convenience, particularly during the festive season when travel demand peaks.
