According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect is accused of causing a financial loss to the government by renting a Prado jeep using funds allocated for the Kandy North Pathadumbara Integrated Water Supply Project, which was implemented by the board.
Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been rented despite two government vehicles already being assigned for the use of the board’s chairman. A sum of Rs. 12,750,000 had allegedly been paid as rent without verifying the purpose for which the vehicle was used.
The former General Manager has also been charged with corruption and conspiracy to commit the offence of obtaining undue advantage from a supplier. Authorities allege that payments were made to the supplier without properly accepting the vehicle and in violation of procurement regulations, as the vehicle was obtained from a private institution without following due process.
The suspect was taken into custody by the Bribery Commission over the alleged offences and was produced before court. The court ordered that he be remanded until the 20th pending further proceedings.
