President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government’s priority is to build a country where no child becomes a victim of the drug menace and where the hardships faced by the current generation are not passed on to the next.

Addressing the Central Province programme of the national anti-drug campaign, the President said drug abuse has spread across villages and towns, with children becoming the first victims. He warned that drug-related violence, including recent shootings, is driven by competition within the illicit drug trade.

He emphasized that eradicating the drug menace is not solely the responsibility of the government or security forces, but a collective duty of society. Religious leaders, educators, parents and community members were urged to actively participate in protecting children from falling into addiction.
