International Women’s Day 2026 will be observed worldwide on March 8, under the global theme declared by the United Nations: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”

In line with this global commemoration, Sri Lanka’s National Women’s Day celebration will be held in Matara, organized by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs. The main events are scheduled to take place at the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Hall of the University of Ruhuna and the Matara Beach Park premises.

The primary objective of the 2026 National Women’s Day celebration is to affirm the social, political, and economic rights of women and to encourage their more active participation in the country’s development process.

By organizing the national celebration outside Colombo, the Ministry aims to create new market opportunities for rural women entrepreneurs, raise awareness on preventing violence against women, and recognize and honor women who have made exceptional contributions to society.

The event is expected to bring together policymakers, community leaders, women entrepreneurs, civil society representatives, and the general public in a collective effort to advance gender equality and empower women and girls across the nation.
