Special camera systems were installed on trains today (11) as part of a new initiative aimed at preventing collisions between wild elephants and trains.

A committee has been appointed to implement practical and immediate solutions to address the growing issue of elephant-train collisions. The committee is led by Ministers Dhammika Patabendi and Bimal Rathnayake.

During discussions, it was decided to equip trains operating along railway lines frequently used by wild elephants with special camera systems. Accordingly, the installation of the relevant camera equipment was carried out today (11) on the Pulathisi train at the Dematagoda Railway Yard.

Following a one-week observation period, authorities are expected to decide on any additional features or improvements required for the camera system.

Steps have also been taken to inform train drivers about locations where elephant collisions frequently occur, particularly during night journeys on routes passing through the Northern, Batticaloa, and forest-adjacent areas.

Additionally, railway authorities have taken measures to install warning signboards along both sides of the railway tracks in high-risk areas.
