Vavuniya committee reviews Rs. 1.8 billion road development plan

The Vavuniya Special Development Committee convened under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to review ongoing infrastructure projects and discuss new proposals. The meeting was held under the patronage of Minister Bimal Ratnayake, Deputy Minister Upali Samarasinghe, and Vavuniya District Secretary P.E. Sarathchandra.

Officials reviewed the progress of road reconstruction following damages caused by Cyclone Ditva, with special focus on the widening of key roads, including the A9 main road passing through Vavuniya city. It was revealed that Rs. 1.8 billion has been allocated for road development in the district. Authorities were instructed to expedite completion of projects pending from 2025.

Attention was also given to the upcoming closure of the Northern Railway Line after February 15 for necessary repairs. In addition, proposals were made to introduce a new road regulation system within two months for vans and three-wheelers transporting school children.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Road Development Authority, government representatives, and Vanni District Parliamentarians M. Jagadeeswaran, T. Thilakanathan, Kader Mastan, T. Ravikaran, and P. Sathyalingam.
