The verdict in the case relating to the assault and murder of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his personal security guard is scheduled to be delivered today (11).
The incident occurred on May 9, 2022, during a period of unrest, when a shooting took place in the Nittambuwa area, resulting in the deaths of then MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer. Several suspects were arrested in connection with the incident following investigations.
Subsequently, the Attorney General filed indictments against 42 defendants before the Gampaha High Court over the double murder. On July 28, 2023, 37 suspects who had been remanded in custody were released on bail under strict conditions by a three-judge bench of the Gampaha High Court.
Following this decision, the Attorney General filed an appeal seeking to nullify the bail order. Accordingly, on February 12, 2024, the Supreme Court issued an order to take up the appeal petition for hearing.
