The Cabinet has approved a pilot project to introduce air-conditioned low-floor buses with facilities for people with special needs, under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.
A total of 10 buses have been ordered, and they are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka by March 15, 2026. The buses are specially designed to make travel safer, more comfortable, and easier to access for passengers with disabilities.
Since the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) currently does not have the facilities or technology to operate and maintain these buses, the Cabinet approved their transfer to Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Company, established under the SLTB in July 2025. The company will manage the buses as part of broader efforts to modernise urban public transport.
This pilot project is a first step in a larger plan to introduce 100 modern, technologically advanced buses in the Colombo area. The move is expected to improve accessibility and inclusivity in public transport, providing better services for all passengers, especially those with special needs.
