According to Sri Lanka’s presidential office, President Dissanayake conveyed his appreciation after Pakistan confirmed its participation, underlining the importance of keeping cricket above political and security challenges.
He said Sri Lanka values the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the ICC, in safeguarding the spirit of the game and ensuring fans do not miss out on one of cricket’s most anticipated contests.
Earlier, President Dissanayake had urged Pakistan to play the match during a phone call with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Referring to the long-standing cricketing ties between the two countries, he recalled Pakistan’s continued support for Sri Lankan cricket during periods of terrorism in Sri Lanka.
“Pakistan gave priority to its long-standing relations with Sri Lanka above all else, and the Pakistani cricket team continued to tour the country to play cricket despite terrorism,” President Dissanayake was quoted as saying.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the Sri Lankan president’s sentiments and highlighted Colombo’s reciprocal support during difficult times for Pakistan cricket. He noted that Sri Lanka had stood by Pakistan when security concerns threatened international cricket in the country.
“Recently, the Sri Lankan team took an unforgettable step for the Pakistani nation and cricket fans by not cancelling the tour of Pakistan,” the prime minister said, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The confirmation of the India–Pakistan clash in Colombo is being seen as a significant boost for the T20 World Cup and a reaffirmation of cricket diplomacy in the region, with fans across South Asia eagerly awaiting the marquee encounter.
