The Government of Pakistan on Monday confirmed that the national cricket team will play its scheduled ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against India on February 15, 2026, in Colombo, ending days of uncertainty surrounding the high-profile fixture.

In a statement posted on X, the government said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was formally briefed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on the outcomes of high-level consultations involving the PCB, the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

According to the statement, the government reviewed formal requests submitted by the BCB, along with supporting communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other ICC member nations. These countries urged Pakistan to play a leadership role in resolving challenges affecting the continuity of the tournament.

“The Government of Pakistan has reviewed the formal requests extended to the PCB by the BCB, as well as the supporting communications from Sri Lanka, the UAE, and other member nations,” the statement said, adding that Pakistan appreciated the sentiments expressed by Bangladesh.

“The profound gratitude expressed by our brotherly nation is received with great warmth. Pakistan reaffirms that it stands shoulder to shoulder with Bangladesh,” the government said, referring to remarks made earlier by BCB President Aminul Islam.

The statement also revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a phone call earlier in the day from Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During what was described as a “warm and friendly conversation,” both leaders recalled the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, particularly their mutual support during difficult times.

President Dissanayake requested the prime minister to give serious consideration to resolving the impasse surrounding the match, emphasizing Pakistan’s past support for Sri Lankan cricket during periods of terrorism.

“In view of the outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan national cricket team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its scheduled fixture in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” the statement said.

The government said the decision was taken to protect the spirit of cricket and ensure the continuity of the global sport across all participating nations.

“The prime minister and the people of Pakistan extend their best wishes to the Men in Green. We remain confident that our team will carry the spirit of sportsmanship and national pride onto the field as they compete for global glory,” the statement added.

Earlier, Sri Lankan President Dissanayake, in remarks shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, recalled Pakistan’s unwavering support for Sri Lankan cricket during times of insecurity, noting that Pakistan continued to tour Sri Lanka despite terrorist threats.

Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the sentiments, acknowledging that Sri Lanka had also stood by Pakistan during challenging periods and had played a key role in keeping international cricket alive in the country.
