Sri Lanka is aiming to become a premier event destination in South Asia with the formation of a 25-member advisory council tasked with boosting the nation’s event management industry. The council, appointed under the Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Ministry and chaired by Event Management Association President Saliya Weerasekara, marks the first time the service sector has a dedicated advisory body.

The industry, which employs 30,000 directly and supports 80,000 indirectly, contributed Rs. 60 billion in 2025 and is targeting Rs. 250 billion in the coming years. Council discussions emphasized streamlining permits, protecting creative rights, maintaining a national events calendar, and developing modern venues in Colombo to attract international gatherings.

Officials say the council will not only strengthen the local industry but also promote Sri Lankan creativity globally and link events closely with tourism, positioning the country as a key player in South Asia’s $1.5 trillion event market.
