The charges arose from what the court described as malicious conduct directed at the Chief Justice and other Supreme Court judges. The court ruled that Jayatunga’s actions amounted to a serious breach of the ethical standards expected of members of the legal profession and constituted a direct affront to the dignity and authority of the judiciary.
In addition to the prison sentence, the Supreme Court ordered that Jayatunga be removed from the roll of attorneys-at-law, effectively disbarring him from the legal profession.
The verdict was delivered by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court following the conclusion of hearings into three separate complaints filed by the Attorney General against the respondent.
