The Supreme Court has sentenced suspended attorney-at-law Susil Jayatunga to three years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of contempt of court and violations of Supreme Court rules.

The charges arose from what the court described as malicious conduct directed at the Chief Justice and other Supreme Court judges. The court ruled that Jayatunga’s actions amounted to a serious breach of the ethical standards expected of members of the legal profession and constituted a direct affront to the dignity and authority of the judiciary.

In addition to the prison sentence, the Supreme Court ordered that Jayatunga be removed from the roll of attorneys-at-law, effectively disbarring him from the legal profession.

The verdict was delivered by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court following the conclusion of hearings into three separate complaints filed by the Attorney General against the respondent.
