Police opened fire on a lorry early this morning in the Adadola area within the Ambalangoda police division after the driver ignored orders to stop, police said.
Officers attached to the Combat Motorcycle Unit of the Ambalangoda Police Station had signaled a suspicious lorry travelling towards Ambalangoda to halt for inspection. However, the driver failed to comply and continued driving, prompting police to pursue the vehicle.
As the lorry continued to evade officers, police opened fire in the Wadduwa area to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Upon inspection, police found 10 cows and four buffaloes being transported illegally in the lorry. Police further said that one cow had been slaughtered, with its throat slit, inside the vehicle.
Two suspects found in the lorry were arrested at the scene. Police also recovered 5,200 milligrams of the narcotic drug ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) from their possession. The arrested suspects, aged 42 and 46, are residents of Akuressa and Beruwala.
Meanwhile, the driver of the lorry and another suspect fled the scene. Ambalangoda Police have launched further investigations to arrest the suspects who escaped.
