The immediate transfer of Dr. Charles Nugawela, who served as Acting Director of the National Kidney Hospital, has exposed the duplicity and administrative failures of the current Ministry of Health, according to Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, Chairman of the Doctors' Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights.
Dr. Nugawela, widely credited for his dedicated service to kidney patients during the severe drug shortage over the past few years, was transferred following pressure from trade unions, Dr. Sanjeewa alleged.
He said it was deeply regrettable that Dr. Nugawela had become a victim of weak administration, despite working closely with donors for many years to ensure uninterrupted care for kidney patients at a time when essential medicines and surgical supplies were unavailable across the island.
