The continuous protest launched by Madel (beach seine) fishermen in front of the Presidential Secretariat entered its fourth consecutive day today (February 8).

Meanwhile, fishermen engaged in the Madel fishing industry announced that they will withdraw entirely from Madel fishing activities across the island starting tomorrow.

The protest began on February 5 in opposition to the government’s decision to ban the use of mechanical equipment in the Madel fishing industry. Fishermen argue that the restriction severely affects their livelihoods and threatens the sustainability of the traditional fishing sector.

Member of Parliament Hector Appuhamy, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), visited the protest site to meet with the fishermen participating in the continuous demonstration.

In addition, former State Minister of Fisheries and current Member of Parliament Dilip Wedaarachchi also arrived at the premises of the Presidential Secretariat to join the hunger strike in solidarity with the protesting Madel fishermen.

The fishermen insist that the protest will continue until the authorities reconsider the decision and engage in meaningful discussions to address their concerns.
