Co-hosts Sri Lanka kicked off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in style, registering a comfortable 20-run victory over Ireland in their opening match in Colombo on Monday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 163 for 6. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with an unbeaten 56 off 43 deliveries, striking five boundaries. He was well supported by Kamindu Mendis, who provided the late impetus with a brisk 44 off just 19 balls, smashing four fours and two sixes.

For Ireland, George Dockrell and Barry McCarthy were the standout bowlers, claiming two wickets apiece to restrict Sri Lanka from crossing the 170-run mark.

In reply, Ireland struggled to keep up with the required run rate and were bowled out for 143 in 19.5 overs. Harry Tector top-scored with 40, while Ross Adair chipped in with 34, but the visitors failed to build substantial partnerships.

Sri Lanka’s spin duo proved decisive in the second innings, with Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga picking up three wickets each to derail Ireland’s chase.

The win gives Sri Lanka a positive start to their World Cup campaign, while Ireland will look to bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures
