More than 4,000 child abuse cases are currently pending before High Courts across Sri Lanka, according to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA).

The NCPA revealed that a total of 4,289 cases have been filed, with 1,683 cases expected to be taken up for hearing in the near future. These cases involve serious offences against children, including rape, grave sexual abuse, exploitation, cruelty, and the publication of obscene material involving minors.

Indictments for these offences have been filed by the Attorney General, and legal proceedings are continuing in courts across the country. The NCPA stated that the cases reflect the ongoing challenges faced in addressing crimes against children and emphasized the importance of strengthening legal processes to ensure timely justice for victims.

Authorities continue to work with the judicial system to expedite hearings and reinforce child protection mechanisms nationwide.
