China’s Unitree G1 humanoid robot took over 130,000 steps in minus 47.4 degrees Celsius conditions in Xinjiang’s Altay region, successfully tracing a Winter Olympics emblem on the ice.

The test marked the first time a humanoid robot had achieved fully autonomous walking in such extreme cold conditions, according to Chinese broadcaster CCTV.

To withstand the harsh environment, the G1 was modified for the task, wearing an orange winter puffer jacket and plastic protective sleeves around its legs and feet, according to Humanoids Daily.

Launched in May 2024, the G1 weighs about 35 kilograms and stands roughly 127 centimeters tall. It is equipped with between 23 and 43 joint motors and delivers a maximum joint torque of 120 newton-meters. VN Express reported.

It is priced from 99,000 yuan, or about US$14,240, in the Chinese market.

Hangzhou-based Unitree was recently ranked the world’s second-largest robotics firm by shipments and installations in reports from Omdia and Counterpoint Research, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Omdia estimated Unitree shipped about 4,200 humanoid robots, accounting for 32% of the global market, while Counterpoint reported the company represented 26.4% of worldwide installations, or roughly 4,224 units.
