Members of the Joint Opposition in the Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha have alleged that three councillors elected under the National People’s Power (NPP) party banner have embezzled public funds by awarding government contracts in their own names.
Addressing a media briefing, the Opposition members claimed that the Local Government Ordinance prohibits Pradeshiya Sabha members from awarding contracts to themselves. They further alleged that such actions constitute grounds for the termination of a councillor’s membership.
The Joint Opposition stated that a complaint regarding the alleged irregularities has been lodged with the Governor of the Western Province. They also said that legal action would be initiated against the relevant councillors in the future.
Quoting council records, the Opposition alleged that the council report for December refers to funds received by councillors Ashoka Kumara and Dharmawansa, and details transactions allegedly carried out by councillor Sahan Prasad using automated teller machines (ATMs). They claimed that financial transactions of this nature are prohibited under existing regulations and warned that violations could result in the loss of membership.
The Opposition further alleged financial mismanagement by the Chairman of the Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha, accusing him of excessive expenditure on fuel and vehicle rentals. They claimed that the Chairman receives approximately 500 litres of fuel per month at the council’s expense and uses a vehicle rented at a monthly cost of around Rs. 260,000.
Opposition members argued that such expenses contradict election pledges made to reduce waste and protect public funds, accusing the current administration of misusing public resources and enjoying undue privileges.
