Sri Lanka has taken a major step to combat the rising threat of cyber crime with the establishment of a dedicated police division. The announcement was made by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, during the inauguration of the Polpitiya Police Station.
The Minister revealed that computer-related crimes have increased sharply, with around 23 to 25 cases reported daily, highlighting the urgent need for specialized action. The new division will be equipped with modern technology and staffed by officers specially trained in cyber investigations.
This move is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Sri Lanka Police and build an efficient, exemplary, and corruption-free law enforcement system. Authorities say the cyber crime division represents a significant milestone in protecting the country’s digital security and keeping pace with evolving criminal trends.
