Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala said that a decision has been taken to establish a new police division dedicated to preventing and investigating computer-related crimes (cyber crime).
The Minister made this statement while attending the opening ceremony of the Polpitiya Police Station yesterday (06).
Commenting on the rising trend of crime, he noted that between 23 and 25 cyber-related complaints are reported daily, describing the figure as significantly high. He said steps are being taken to address this challenge through the introduction of new technology, specialized expertise, and the systematic modernization of the Sri Lanka Police.
The Minister emphasized that these measures will enable more efficient investigation and detection of cyber crimes. He added that the government’s main objective is to transform the Sri Lanka Police into a highly efficient, professional, and corruption-free institution.
He further stated that a conducive environment has been created for talented officers to advance within the service, while mechanisms have also been introduced to remove officers involved in misconduct from the police force.
