Sri Lanka has earned nearly USD 260 million (approximately LKR 80 billion) from the export of cinnamon-based products during the past year, according to the Department of Cinnamon Development.

This marks the highest annual income ever recorded in the country’s history from cinnamon-related exports.

Director General of the Department, Janaka Liyanage, stated that out of the total export revenue, USD 251 million was generated solely from the export of cinnamon quills. The remaining income was earned through exports of cinnamon bark, leaves, and cinnamon oil.

One of the key reasons behind this exceptional performance is the significant expansion of Sri Lanka’s cinnamon export market. Previously limited to around 70 countries, Sri Lanka has successfully expanded its reach to over 100 countries by 2025, contributing substantially to the growth in export earnings.

The global demand for “Ceylon Cinnamon” continues to rise due to its unique medicinal properties and high food safety standards, further strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in the international market.

Leveraging this strong global demand, the Department of Cinnamon Development has set a target to increase cinnamon export revenue to USD 300 million by 2026, the Director General emphasized.
