Parliament approves extension of atate of emergency by majority vote

Parliament has approved the resolution to extend the proclaimed State of Public Emergency by a further month, with a majority of 104 votes.

The resolution received 106 votes in favour, while only two votes were cast against it.

A division was called for by Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam. Accordingly, Members of Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and Selvam Adaikalanathan voted against the resolution, while 106 members voted in favour.

Announcing the result, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramanayake stated that the resolution under Item No. 80 of the Public Security Ordinance had been passed by a majority of 104 votes.
