A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court claiming that the government’s proposed Tenants Protection Bill infringes fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

According to court reports, the Attorney General has been named as the respondent in the petition. The petition states that while the bill aims to safeguard tenants, its provisions could unfairly disadvantage landowners and property owners.

The petitioner further alleges that clauses 1 to 14 of the bill violate Articles 3 and 4 of the Constitution, which protect fundamental rights. The petition requests that any approval of the contested provisions in Parliament should require a two-thirds majority vote along with public referendum approval.
