The revelations were made when the case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.
Investigating officers told court that a Honda Vessel motor vehicle, valued at approximately Rs. 25 million and taken into police custody at the time of the suspect’s arrest, was registered in the name of another individual but was in fact owned by the lawyer.
Although the vehicle was registered under the name of Wilfred Dissanayake, statements obtained from him have revealed that the suspect lawyer had purchased the vehicle using her own funds, the CID stated.
The CID further informed court that investigations are underway to determine how the funds used to purchase the vehicle were obtained, while inquiries are also being conducted into financial transactions and money circulation in the suspect’s bank accounts.
Officials also informed court that the suspect lawyer is currently being detained under detention orders obtained in terms of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, while further investigations are ongoing.
Additionally, CID officers told court that investigations have revealed the lawyer had allegedly provided assistance to the shooter accused of killing Ganemulla Sanjeewa. According to the CID, the suspect had supplied the shooter with two ties, a sticker bearing the emblem used on lawyers’ vehicles, copies of the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as photographs required to prepare a lawyer’s identity card.
